Chalazia and styes are common causes of inflammation or a bump on the eyelid. Although they may seem similar, they have different characteristics, and their treatment depends on the duration of the condition and the findings during the evaluation.
What is a chalazion?
A chalazion is an inflammatory reaction caused by blockage of one of the meibomian glands in the eyelid. It may begin with swelling and tenderness but often develops into a firm, painless lump. Unlike a stye, a chalazion is not usually caused by an active infection.
What is a stye?
A stye usually appears more suddenly and presents as a red, swollen, and painful area on the eyelid.
In some cases, after the initial inflammation subsides, a blocked gland may persist and a chalazion may form.
How are they treated?
In recent cases, treatment may include warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, and medications when indicated.
When a chalazion persists despite conservative treatment, it can be treated by injecting medication into the lesion or by surgical drainage, depending on the individual case.
Chalazion surgery
Chalazion surgery is an outpatient procedure that is usually performed under local anesthesia.
Usually, a small incision is made on the inner side of the eyelid to remove the inflammatory contents, avoiding a visible scar on the skin.
Recovery is usually quick, although swelling or a small bruise may occur during the first few days.
When should you see a specialist?
It is advisable to see an ophthalmologist when the lesion does not disappear after several weeks, increases in size, causes significant discomfort, or appears repeatedly.
Persistent, recurrent, or unusual lesions should be examined to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other eyelid diseases.
